Vincent Van Gogh has always had my heart.
I have suffered times of mental illness.
I cannot imagine how he was able to paint such joy into his work during times of unimaginable suffering.
He is an inspiration to us all.

I really believe the most true and powerful works come out of struggle. Also, this post reminds me of a day long ago when I was visiting NYC and walked into MoMa where there was a Van Gogh show… a huge one that happened to be sold out. It was also my birthday, and as I turned to walk out really disappointed that I wouldn’t get to see the show, a man came out of nowhere and walked toward me with a ticket to the show and handed it to me. He had an extra ticket and it was mine and he wouldn’t take any money. I will never forget that day! And when I got into the show, many of the paintings brought tears to my eyes. Thanks, L’Adelaide for reminding me of the kindness of strangers!

Thank you for your post, subjectively I don’t think van Gogh painted “such joy” (as you mentioned), I consider he painted life instead, most of his time. van Gogh has a great admiration for Jean-Francois Millet (van Gogh called Millet “Father Millet”), who was so close to the peasants’ lives and painted lots of that subject, the hardship in those days, van Gogh followed suit… van Gogh indeed painted nature differently, he dissected almost everything he saw (in my opinion), perhaps that was his “joy”, but I am not quite sure, I feel that he painted nature with his utmost earnestness, as if he tried to understand God.

Having seen some of Van Gogh’s work in the original was one of the best experiences of my life. The reproductions are beautiful but he sculptured paint on his canvasses and made them truly intense to see with one’s eyes. I think the pain and passion of his life shone through best in those almost manic strokes.

I don’t know squat about art or artists or paint or paintings. Most times I don’t know what I like even, and if I DO like it, it’s difficult to say why… I like Cafe and Starry night. They’re just….pretty.
